Decoding modal shift: why is it so hard to get people out of their cars?

This week, my blog links to an interview I gave to Wiseair for their newsletter.

Wiseair is a technology platform that helps large employers transform commuting into an opportunity for employee wellbeing, attraction, retention and cost savings.

The interview was centred on what corporations could do to encourage their staff to switch to more sustainable modes of transport. The discussion included:

  • What do we get wrong about getting people to switch to public transport?
  • How do low or free fares help?
  • What about encouraging cycling?
  • How does this apply to carpooling?
  • How do company employee policies help or hinder getting people to give up their cars?

The full interview can be found here.

If you have any further thoughts or comments, you can always reply to this email or write to me at russell@transportlc.org.

Stop Subsidising EVs. Start Charging Them.

July 2nd, 2026 Subscribe Stop Subsidising EVs. Start Charging Them. Key Takeaways Subsidising EVs reduces emissions compared to doing nothing, but it is not the same as solving transport's emissions problem. Raising fuel taxes on ICEs would achieve the same shift toward EVs as subsidies, while raising revenue instead of spending it, but it remains politically out of reach for now. Cheap running costs make EVs induce more driving, which increases congestion and pushes up emissions from the ICE...
